Structure & Tone
Jen highlights the struggles that black children learn to adjust to within white spaces. Specifically, assimilation, identity, race & racism, and acceptance. The struggles are not singular but a shared experience that black and in fact brown people have been vocalizing from the beginning. What makes this story unique is the ability to accurately highlight the experience of black girls in America as it is loosely based on my childhood. Like Boyhood and 8th grade it is aimed to chronicle the growing pains with discovering one’s self especially when others are ignorant to their trials.
