STORY

Jendayi Washington is a young preteen who once loved writing and illustrating now has quickly lost touch with her passions after the sudden death of her grandmother Elle Washington. Forced into a new environment, Katrina Washington pressures her daughter to adjust to suburbia after the final move. Baring the responsibility of looking after her younger sister Lela Washington, Jendayi begins to spiral out of control.

Thrust into suburbia Jendayi soon makes friends with girls who are a stark contrast to herself. This becomes dangerous territory. Katrina struggles to connect with Jendayi as they both maneuver through their grief and cope with the impromptu move.

Jendayi is forced to adapt to this newer environment without the protection of her now-deceased grandmother and the guidance of her older sister. At school, the feeling of being an imposter in plain clothes grows at the hands of Hannah Keller. Her dark skin and thick curls add to the imposter syndrome. Jendayi soon learns in order to survive that she must assimilate to her surroundings. Shedding fabrics of herself she becomes known as Jen, no longer Jendayi. This turmulous path that Jendayi follows disrupts her family relations, mental well-being, and causes her to spiral out of control in the most violent ways.
